So, for those who have not heard – I was opening a beer last night when the top ring that retains the cap cracked off. I was apparently applying pressure toward the bottle, and ended up swiping my hand across the remaining rim of sharp jagged glass, catching all 4 knuckles on the way across. Al splinted and bandaged it up, and Mandy drove us all (Jason, Al and myself) to the emergency room.
I was in the ER waiting / being worked on for about five and a half hours. Everyone was waiting for at least 4 of them, before leaving for a little while. I feel really bad about that, but also very thankful to have friends who would do such things.
The doctor initially thought that I had missed all the tendons, but later, with a second opinion, concluded that I must have nicked the ring finger tendon since I was holding the tip of the finger in an odd position. I don’t quite understand how I would be holding the finger where I was if I had damaged the tendon, but I guess I have to assume they were right. This means I need to seen a surgeon on Monday to fix that finger. I guess all I can hope for now is that I haven’t done any irreparable damage.
Between the ER visit and surgery, I’m sure I sure this will be ridiculously expensive. I feel rather helpless right now, and I really hate this feeling – probably because I am too stubborn / self conscious to actually ask for help. I can only imagine how anyone who has ever been in a wheelchair or otherwise disabled would feel. I guess it’s a combination of feeling stupid for this happening at all, feeling worried that it will all be alright, and feeling that I can’t do certain things well or at all right now.
Thanks to all involved for your efforts in taking care of me last night.
You got injured opening a beer can. I’m so sorry. That sucks.
