I just saw an article posting on Slashdot for terrabit data transmission. The comment about the article mentioned that this could transmit a two hour video in .5 seconds. That is awesome, and makes me wonder one thing – what will come after video?
If you think about the history of the web, it started out as text pages which had a realitively tiny file size (a couple KB each). We then went to picutres which were slightly larger files (maybe 1MB each). Then came audio (about 4 MB for a standard MP3). Next was video (700 MB per movie). That brings us to the present. My question is what’s next?
I’m not wondering this in the sense of “we’ll never need faster networking than that” but more I really can’t think of what media will come after video. Maybe some sort of interactive video. It’s basically a question of what the next sense to be manipulated… maybe we’ll come up with scent transmission or well learn to transmit objects (or at least rebuild them like the replicators in Star Trek).
Just something to ponder.
People.
It will be like in Logan’s Run where the girl comes out of the computer.
Well, I would replicate myself a Jeep Wrangler with a Clayton hard-arm 4″ suspension system, american racing chamber rims, BFG MT’s, a set of ARB differential lockers, on board air, a warn 9,500lbs winch, a hanson 60″ front bumper, a 350 V8, swaylock swaybar system, some rocker guards, roll cage, and some other cool stuff. Yes, a replicator would be sweet.
