Colorado Skiing – Day 2 – Breckenridge

It snowed Monday night and through Tuesday.  Our original plan was to go do Vail, mainly on Doug’s thought that it was the most expansive place and would be the best with the fresh snow.  The freeway’s thought was that we shouldn’t have been driving, so we diverted to Breckenridge, which was along the way.  It was on our list of places to go, and the weather kind of dealt us a reordering.

Turns out, that was probably the best choice we should have made anyway.  Breckenridge has apparently been getting more snow than anywhere else, and this fall was no exception.

My skis are conducive to racing, not to powder, so the snowboard was employed for the day.  It was easily the most awesome day of snowboarding I’ve ever had.  I had never really taken the board out in true powder before where the edges never really hit solid ground.  It’s a very different feeling, just kind of floating.  Even on my board, which is a pretty generic all-mountain board (since I don’t really know what I’m doing on a snowboard anyway) it was awesome.

Unfortunately, the snow, which was oh-so-delightful for the snowboarding meant I didn’t bother taking any pictures.  If I collect some from the others, I’ll post a few here.

On returning to Silverthorne I70 was shut down just past the town, so apparently the conditions got bad enough to shut down the freeway, or something happened further along which warranted shutting down the road.  I think it was a confirmation that we did the right thing by abandoning the Vail plan and going to Breckenridge instead.
