One of the zoo’s lionesses – I don’t have such a good picture of the male, he was too lazy and just laid around all day. OK, he was also very old and has since died, plus, laying around all day is pretty much a cat’s job I think. Picture… Continue reading
Flamingos… Chilean Flamingos. I didn’t know there were multiple kinds. Apparently the Lincoln Park zookeepers are aware of the special diet they need to keep their plumage nice and bright. If I recall, this was taken on a pretty dull, overcast day which was probably good for limiting the contrast… Continue reading
For a few years, we thought that the polar bear exhibit was just a mean joke because there was not and, as far as we could tell, had never been a polar bear in the habitat. Then one showed up, and she looks sad (at least in this picture). Apparently… Continue reading
OK – Thanksgiving and the shopping holiday are over, back to normal. Here’s one of the zoo’s amur tigers, which apparently used to be called Siberian tigers but the name was changed to better reflect their natural range. Picture taken with Canon 60D, EF 70-300mm lens @ 235mm, f/5.6, 1/80… Continue reading
Happy Black Friday! In a complete coincidence, today’s picture is the largest animal at the zoo: an eastern black rhinocerous. Picture taken with Sony a6000, SEL 18200 lens @ 200mm, f/11, 1/320 sec shutter, ISO 250.
Happy Thanksgiving! I couldn’t put my finger on a picture of a turkey, so instead you get another (previous one posted quite a while ago) shot of a giraffe – a Barinog Giraffe to be specific, though I was not aware there were distinctions prior to just now. I’m not sure… Continue reading
This is the best shot I have of this guy, the zoo’s Pygmy Hippo, in no small part because it resides behind a seemingly ever-dirty pane of extra heavy glass which also forms the side to the river / pool in its habitat. The ability to crank the ISO of… Continue reading
I’ve apparently spent a lot of time wandering around zoos, and the Lincoln Park Zoo in particular. So, this picture is the start of the series “Lincoln Park Zoo Animals” (I felt very creative in coming up with that title). Independent of various thoughts on animals in captivity, I like… Continue reading
A general landscape shot from a hike outside Boulder, CO. The picture didn’t turn out quite as I hoped, but I still like it. Picture taken with Canon Rebel 350D, EF-S 17-85mm @ 17mm, 1/500 sec shutter, f/14, ISO 400
